csv-api alternatives: datatomcp vs SheetDB, Sheet Best and a DIY MCP server

By Killian Helf, founder of datatomcp · Updated 19 October 2026. Competitor prices and features were checked against their public pricing and documentation pages on 18 October 2026, and the import comparison is our own test with the same two files in both products. Check their sites for changes.

There are four common ways to make a CSV or a Google Sheet usable by AI agents and apps. They are built for different people, so the right choice depends on who needs the data and how often it changes.

datatomcp vs csv-api

csv-api and datatomcp do the closest thing: upload tabular data, get an API and a remote MCP server. The differences are in how much data you get for free, Google Sheets, and how messy files are handled.

In our test, the same two files went through both products. On a 2,000-row export, csv-api kept amounts like "$2145" and mixed date formats as text without warning. On a file with 8 malformed lines, it rejected the whole file. datatomcp imported 490 rows, listed the 8 bad lines by number, and flagged the text-typed numbers and mixed dates with one-click fixes.

Choose csv-api if you want agents to run their own SQL, or you already use it. Choose datatomcp if your data is larger than a few thousand rows, lives in Google Sheets, or arrives messy.

Google Sheets API tools (SheetDB, Sheet Best and similar)

These turn a Google Sheet into a REST endpoint, usually with read and write access, so a website or form can use the sheet as a small database. If you need to write rows back into the sheet, they are the better fit; datatomcp is read-only by design.

If you need to query the sheet (filter, group by and total server-side, with results sized for an AI agent), and you want an MCP server for Claude or ChatGPT on the same data, datatomcp is built for that. See Google Sheets as a read-only API.

A do-it-yourself DuckDB MCP server

If you're a developer and the files are on your machine, a local MCP server with DuckDB is free, fast and flexible, and Claude Code or Cursor can use it directly. We'd recommend it for that case.

It stops being simple when the agent isn't on your machine. Claude.ai and ChatGPT need a public HTTPS server with OAuth. Automations need an API. The data needs to follow a Google Sheet that keeps changing. datatomcp is that hosted layer, without running a server.

Summary

  • Local files, developer, one machine: DIY DuckDB MCP server.
  • Read and write a sheet from a website: a Sheets API tool.
  • Agents and apps querying CSVs or Google Sheets, including Claude.ai and ChatGPT, with sync and exact totals: datatomcp. Related: hosted CSV MCP server, CSV to REST API.
